Wilber Township is a general law township located in northeast Michigan in Iosco County on Michigan’s Sunrise Side. It has a total area of 72.7 square miles, 72.5 square miles of which is land area, and 0.2 square miles in water. Approximately 66% of the land area in Wilber Township is in state and federal forestland. The permanent population in 2011, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, was 729 persons.
The township was organized in the spring of 1878 by taking one township from AuSable township and one from Plainfield township, and was named for Marvin Wilber, one of the early settlers.
In its early years, Wilber Township had its own post office, and at one time, three schools, the last of which was closed in the early 1940s. The former Wilber School is now the Township Hall.
Assets owned by the township include the Wilber Township Hall, located on approximately one acre of land, and the Wilber Township Cemetery, consisting of approximately 11 acres, of which 4 acres are platted for current cemetery use, with an additional 6.4 acres available for future expansion.
The township has parts of two school districts within its boundaries: Oscoda Area Schools and Tawas Area Schools. These boundaries are determined by the State Board of Education.
Wilber Township is home to the Silver Valley Campground and Corsair Cross Country Ski Trail System in the Huron-Manistee National Forests, the latter consisting of 44.5 miles of maintained ski trails, one of the largest groomed trail systems in Michigan; Tuttle Marsh Wildlife area, a 5,000 acre wetland complex managed by the Huron-Manistee National Forests which provides habitat to several species of waterfowl, songbirds, insects, and small mammals, and where migratory birds and reptiles and other animals use these wetlands as nurseries and safe havens; and Red Hawk Golf Club, an 18 hole par 71 course honored to be one of the 15 golf courses featured on the Arthur Hills Michigan Golf Trail.
